Group B Streptococcus in a General Hospital

Abstract: Eighty-six percent of 707 beta-hemolytic streptococci isolated in a general hospital and excluded by presumptive tests from groups A and D were identified serologically as group B. More than 70% of the group B isolates were from urine cultures, the female genital gract, or newborn infants. Types III and II were the most common group B serotypes from most sources. However, types Ia, Ib, and Ic were more commonly isolated from the respiratory tract than from other sites, and type III was responsible for most ser… Show more

“…High rates of tetracycline resistance were noted, as has been described in other studies (3,4,11,31), and this is likely due to the presence of the tetM gene (27). tetM can be readily transferred via conjugative transposons (29), which may account for its spread under selective pressure.…”

“…Group B streptococci are important human pathogens, particularly in the neonatal period (2,3,10,30,31). Serotype Ib streptococci are most frequently associated with septicemia occurring in the first few days after birth (2,10,30,31).…”

“…Strains of group B Streptococcus have become increasingly fiequent isolates from neonates and infants with serious bacterial infection during the past decade (1,2,4,8). Because this microbial species has previously been noted to be uniformly susceptible to the penicillins (7,9), penicillin G has been the recommended drug of choice for the treatment of group B streptococcal infections (3,7).…”
