“…In 1977 a case of group A streptococcal septicemia with a monoarticular arthritis of the right shoulder, originating from an infected Lippe's loop has been described [14]. Disseminated infection with necrotizing fasciitis of the right shoulder was also observed after insertion of a levonorgestrel-containing intrauterine system, and the cultures from the coil and vaginal swabs were positive for group A streptococcus [15]. In the opposite to these studies, in our case the right shoulder arthritis was aseptic and no clinical evidence of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome was available.…”

“…Whilst a very rare occurrence, cases of invasive group A streptococcus have been reported following insertion of intrauterine contraceptive methods (Venkataramanasetty et al 2009;Saleh et al 2011;Gisser et al 2002;Cho and Fernando 2013). Although asymptomatic women do not need to be screened for group A streptococcus prior to IUD insertion, women found to be carrying the organism in the vagina should be treated (Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare 2015).…”
