The elaboration of environmental sustainability indexes (ESI) aims to describe the complexity between social, environmental and ecological health. These indexes play a crucial role by helping stakeholders during the decision-making process and by identifying possible sites that require practical sustainable actions. In this study, we aim to elaborate an ESI for hydrographic basins. We use three factors to build the index: land use; vulnerability to soil degradation and topographic land attributes; and human development. The human development factor includes the dimensions of education, sanitation, longevity and income. These three factors are recommended by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and reflect the pressure–state–impact assessment model. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed ESI, we applied it in a hydrographic basin located in southern Brazil. The sustainability level variation in the basin was classified into five groups: very low (0%), low (17%), intermediate (72%), high (11%) and very high (0%). The predominance of the intermediate sustainability level was found to mainly owe to the extent of agricultural land and the high degree of susceptibility to soil erosion in areas with low environmental conservation. In areas with native vegetation, environmental sustainability was found to be higher than in areas with other land use types. The resulting ESI will help facilitate future studies in environmental, economic or social dimensions in any hydrographic basin.

Ecological Assessment of Clay Brick Manufacturing in China Using Emergy Analysis

Clay brick is a commonly used building material in China. Due to the enormous land destruction and excessive consumption of resources, such as materials and energy in the manufacture of clay brick, it is important to study its overall sustainability, i.e., in terms of impact on the environment, services, and economy. In this study, emergy analysis is employed, which offers a holistic perspective, unlike typical environmental studies. A series of emergy indices such as renewability rate (R%), nonrenewability rate (N%), unit emergy values (UEVs), emergy yield ratio (EYR), environmental loading ratio (ELR), and emergy sustainability index (ESI) were used to study manufacturing of clay brick. In addition to calculating UEVs of clay brick manufacturing in China (7.18 × 1012 sej/kg), our detailed analysis shows that the nonrenewable resources and imported energy have a dominant impact on the emergy contribution (50.6%) and within the nonrenewable resources, clay is the foremost item, accounting for 33.5% of local emergy inputs. Given different electricity UEVs, the change ranges of clay brick system UEVs are 14.9% (scenario 1), 7.24% (scenario 2), 8.91% (scenario 3), and 6.94% (scenario 4). Furthermore, several policy suggestions are discussed for improving the sustainability of the evaluated system, involving the energy structure adjustment, recycling material replacement, and promotion of energy-saving systems.

Based on the different types of geomorphic units in Xi'an, China, and the groundwater recharge methods of the different geomorphic units, the goal is to ensure the sustainable development and utilization of groundwater, to ensure the natural attributes and to prevent salinization. According to different rainfall conditions, the upper and lower limits of the controlled limit value of groundwater level in different regions are calculated to define the control targets of the different geomorphic units. Based on the calculated controlled limit value of groundwater level and the administrative divisions of Xi'an City, the red lines of groundwater control in each county and city are developed. Four management lines are delineated from the surface to the bottom (from top to bottom, the upper limit of groundwater depth, the upper limit of infiltration of groundwater depth, the lower limit of groundwater depth and the risk line in extremely dry years), and five management areas are delineated (from top to bottom, the prevent soli salinization area, the normal extraction area, the careful extraction area, the permit only in extreme dry years area and the prohibited extraction area) to provide technical support for groundwater management in Xi'an.
