Groundwater Salinization and Freshening Processes in the Luy River Coastal Aquifer, Vietnam

Abstract: The Vietnamese Binh Thuan province located along the Southern Central part of the coast is one of the driest in the country. The population is relying largely on groundwater for irrigation, and the groundwater resources are threatened by climate change and saltwater intrusion in river estuaries. Recent studies, however, reveal that the extension of saltwater intrusions was larger than expected, raising some doubts on the actual origin of the intrusions. In this study, we use the geochemical characterization of… Show more

“…Understanding the interactions between salt and freshwater dynamics is crucial for managing coastal aquifers, yet it is difficult due to the required subsurface information, with high spatial and temporal resolution not always accessible from borehole data. The study area for the field tests is located in the Luy River catchment in the Binh Thuan province (Vietnam, Figure 4), which has been facing saltwater intrusions problems for many years [68][69][70].…”

“…Nevertheless, the previous studies only focused on assessing quality by comparing with Vietnamese standards or evaluating certain parameters, typically heavy metals [19,20]. In addition, studies are almost exclusively aimed at assessing reserves, vulnerability [21], or predictive models of saline intrusion [10,22,23]. The research by Nguyen et al (2015) [22] performed cluster analysis based on hydrogeochemical data.…”
