Groundwater quality assessment in Oropos–Kalamos basin, Attica, Greece

Abstract: Groundwater samples were collected from 25 sampling sites of the Oropos-Kalamos basin aiming to describe the groundwater quality in relation to geology, lithology and anthropogenic activities of the study area. Chromium speciation analysis, factor analysis, GIS database and geochemical data proved successful tools for the identification of natural and anthropogenic factors controlling the geochemical data variability and for the identification of the redox couple controlling Cr speciation. A Durov diagram is u… Show more

“…For further evaluation of extent of metal contamination in the study area and source identification, principal component analysis was used following standard procedure reported in literature (Dragović et al 2008;Yu et al 2008;Franco-Uría et al 2009;Alexakis 2011;Zheng et al 2013). The loadings of measured heavy metal concentrations in the coordinate system of three principal components (PC) were obtained by analysing the correlation matrix.…”

“…The loadings of measured heavy metal concentrations in the coordinate system of three principal components (PC) were obtained by analysing the correlation matrix. For the purposes of determining inter-element relationships, factor loadings between 0.50 and 0.75 were defined as ''moderate'', loadings [0.75 were defined as ''high'', and loading \0.5 were defined as ''low'' (Stamatis et al 2011). In detail, principal component 1(PC1) has the high positive loadings of Cd and Pb ([ ?0.86) and accounts for 58.17 % of variance (Table 4) and is the most important component.…”

“…The area of this aquifer is about 150 km 2 and it is located at the eastern part of the river basin. Very recently, Stamatis et al (2011) studied the hydrogeology and hydrochemistry of Oropos-Kalamos basin, which includes the southeastern part of Asopos river aquifer, as well as other aquifers further to the south.…”

“…On the other hand, Stamatis et al (2011) consider increased concentrations of total Cr and Cr(VI) a combination of both natural (ultrabasic rock masses and ultrabasic fragments within Neogene-Quaternary deposits) and anthropogenic sources. More specifically they argue that in the wider region there are Cr-bearing ultrabasic rocks contributing to the Cr(III) loads in alluvial deposits; Cr(III) under favorable conditions (e.g.…”

“…It also provides a better understanding of possible changes in groundwater quality. Worldwide several researchers have discussed the groundwater quality-related problems (Stamatis et al 2011;Li et al 2012;Massoud 2012;Chen and Feng 2013;Moosavirad et al 2013). In India too, numerous studies have been carried out to assess the suitability of groundwater quality for drinking and irrigation uses (Gowd 2005;Rao 2006;Brindha and Elango 2011;Dar et al 2011;Ramesh and Elango 2012;Sharma et al 2012;Vetrimurugan et al 2013).…”
