As a result of the arid climate of Saudi Arabia, groundwater is the most precious natural resource, providing reliable water supply for the resident population and the development of irrigated agriculture where surface water resources are insufficient and little to meet the water budget requirements of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Therefore, this study was carried out to evaluate the quality of groundwater resources in selected locations of Hail region. This study focused on the important chemical analysis of the available groundwater resources in Hail region. Groundwater samples were collected from 61wells at different locations that cover the Hail region for chemical analysis. Parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), carbonate (CO3-) bicarbonate (HCO-3), chloride (Cl-), and heavy metals were analyzed moreover the calculation of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) to assess the suitability of groundwater for agricultural purposes. The pH values were between 7.10 and 8.23 (M = 7.66). The salinity of groundwater, as a primary indicator of water quality for irrigation, ranged between moderate and high (between 0.27 to 8.99 dS m-1) in most studied water samples. Besides salinity, 31.1% of Hail groundwater samples have the potential risk of chloride hazard (chloride > 10 meq L-1). SAR values were less than 9 for all groundwater samples while the heavy metals were within acceptable levels.

Groundwater is a vital source of irrigation water, and it provides over 80% of the irrigated water supply in Bangladesh. The study aimed to assess the status of irrigation water of the Ganges river basin areas in the middle-west part of Bangladesh through the hydrogeochemical characterization and classification of groundwater. The study parameters were pH, EC, TDS, Ca2+, Mg2+, total hardness, Na+, K+, B, Cl−, HCO3 −, SO 42−, NO3 −, and PO43− along with irrigation water quality index (IWQindex), Na%, soluble sodium percentage, sodium adsorption ratio, residual sodium bicarbonate, magnesium adsorption ratio, permeability index, and Kelley’s ratio. The results showed that most of the water samples were acidic in the pre-monsoon and alkaline in the post-monsoon seasons, and the water type was Ca-HCO3. The significant geochemical process in the area determined was calcite and dolomite mineral dissolution, and there was no active cation exchange, and silicate weathering occurred. The statistical analyses showed that both the geogenic and anthropogenic sources were controlling the chemistry of the groundwater aquifers. Concerning irrigation water quality, the results revealed that all the quality parameters and IWQindex (32.04 to 45.39) were within the safety ranges, except for the EC and total hardness. The study results would be useful for future groundwater monitoring and management of the Ganges basin areas of Bangladesh part.

Physico-chemical analysis of groundwater samples from Ankpa, north central Nigeria was carried outto investigate the quality of the water for drinking and irrigation purposes. The results revealed water of average low pH, indicating slightly acidic conditions of the water. The water is soft, and it is characterized as Na + +K -HCO 3 type. It is good for drinking and other domestic uses. Four indices were evaluated from the groundwater chemistry in order to establish the suitability of the water for irrigation purposes. They are the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), the percentage sodium (%Na), the magnesium hardness (MH) and the permeability index (PI). The SAR values range from 0.86 to 11.19, with an average of 5.68. The interpretation indicates that the groundwater is good to excellent for irrigation. It further shows that over 90% of the samples can be classified as S1 waters, with no alkali hazard anticipated for the crops grown with the water. The range of the %Na in the groundwater in this study is between 16.28 and 73.97, with an average value of 51.27. This shows that the water ranges from excellent to doubtful for irrigation. The magnesium hardness (MH) in the groundwater ranges from 2.05 to 41.04%, with an average of 20.35%. This indicates that the entire water is safe for use for irrigation purposes. The chloride and sulphate concentrations in the groundwater indicate that the water is excellent for irrigation. However, the permeability index shows completely opposite conditions in the area, with all samples with values above 75.
