Grounding Second Language Vocabulary Instruction in Cognitive Science

Abstract: Cognitive neuroscience has gained significant insight into the mechanisms underlying the mental lexicon and their impact on second language vocabulary learning. However, relatively little effort has been put into understanding how these mechanisms may impact instructional practices. We attempt to bridge this gap. Towards that end, we first describe three main properties of the mental lexicon: words have distinct form and meaning representations; these representations are organized in multilingual network struc… Show more

“…Unlike the fuzziness in LRs resulting from particular resistant phonological difficulties, diffused spoken form fuzziness is reduced with more input. A similar pattern of lexical acquisition starting with low-resolution lexical representations that are improved during differentiation and sharpening was reported for L2 children ( Baxter et al, 2021a , b ). Meaning encoding in L2 is also characterized by L2-specific features.…”

“…The optimal question format is actually quite sensitive to the context in which it's asked, and to whom it is being asked. Baxter (2021) researched the effect of making multiple-choice questions more difficult by making the choices more similar. This is called contrasting.…”

“…In a recent article, we reviewed in depth how commonly used instruction methods interact with each of the dimensions described in the model, leading to better or worse learning (Baxter et al, 2021a). In particular, we argued that few teaching methods contribute to developing specificity in all three dimensions, thereby often leading to suboptimal learning outcomes.…”

“…As this figure shows, first, representations themselves can be fuzzy. Circles indicate individual representations and overlap between representations indicates potential confusion; the "fuzzier" the representation, the larger the circle and the more overlap (see also Baxter et al, 2021a). Second, the IntraMap connections (between a word and its translation) can also be fuzzy, leading to difficulties and confusion in translation.…”
