“…Because of the deficient precipitation and soil moisture, there was a 22 percent increase in the amount of irrigation water applied to rice as opposed to that applied during normal years of precipitation and an 80 percent increase in the amount of irrigation applied to cotton and soybeans as opposed to that applied during normal years of precipitation. The increased withdrawals of ground water in 1980 for crop irrigation were reflected by the lowering of ground-water levels (Edds, 1981) between March 1980 andMarch 1981. Declines in water levels in the alluvial aquifer, the principal source of irrigation water, ranged from 0.61 to 1.83 m. Water levels in the Sparta Sand, a supplementary-source aquifer for irrigation, declined as much as 3.05 m. The water-level changes in both aquifers between 1980 and 1981 represent a decline rate of 5 to 10 times greater than the long-term average rate.…”
