e conversion section of the cross passage and shaft is a priority concern in the stress transformation of a tunnel structure during subway underground excavation. In the construction of Subway Line 5 in Xi'an, China, the main line in the loess layer was constructed through the cross passage from the subway shaft of the Yue Deng Pavilion-San Dian Village Station tunnel section. Numerical simulation and field measurement were adopted to study the construction stability of the cross passage and shaft under two possible construction methods: the "shaft followed by cross passage construction" method and the "cross passage parallel shaft construction" method. e results showed that the surface deformation and plastic zone of the surrounding rock are similar under the two construction methods. However, of the two, the "cross passage parallel shaft construction" method was more advantageous in controlling the structural deformation of the original shaft and the stress distribution of the horsehead structure.e field monitoring data showed that the surface settlements and the deformation of the original shaft structures meet the requirement of control standards under the "cross passage parallel shaft construction" method.

Today, the increasing growth of urban construction as a result of urban development necessitates deep excavation in highly dense urban areas, therefore, supporting and securing excavation by appropriate methods have become of crucial importance. In such conditions, common and widely used methods of excavation support will be used by designing engineers. However, each of these methods has its own disadvantages and limitations. Therefore, these methods cannot be used in various conditions with different geotechnical and site properties. In such cases, an accurate analysis of the condition can help the engineers to select and design the supporting and stabilizing system. In this regard, different methods have been used by engineers, among which numerical methods have led to appropriate results. In this study, a series of numerical analyses by the finite element code PLAXIS2D was used for investigating the behavior of an excavated zone in the central region of Ahvaz which has complicated geotechnical and site features. For this purpose, four different and common methods of excavation support including tangent piles with anchorage, a deep soil mixing system with anchorage, tangent piles with struts, and a deep mixing system with struts were examined. The results clearly showed that tangent piles with struts gave the best results due to the rigid-like behavior of its components.

Abstract:The increase in transportation in large cities has made it necessary to construct twin tunnels at shallow depths. As far as the parallel excavation of mechanized twin tunnels is concerned, most of the cases reported in previous studies have focused on the interactions between two horizontally driven tunnels. However, less work has been devoted to the interactions between tunnels stacked over each other. The numerical investigation performed in this study has made it possible to evaluate the influence of the construction process on two stacked tunnels, using the FLAC 3D finite difference element software. The structural forces induced in each of the stacked tunnels and the displacements in the surrounding ground have been highlighted. The results of the numerical analysis indicate that new tunnel construction can have a great impact on an existing tunnel. The greatest impacts are observed when the upper tunnel is excavated first. The excavation of the upper tunnel generally leads to greater surface settlements than when the lower tunnel is excavated first. This study also shows that the normal forces induced in the lower tunnel are always greater than those developed in the upper tunnel. The normal displacements and the bending moments induced in the lower tunnel are usually smaller than those in the upper tunnel.
