Ground Beetle Populations Near a Kraft Mill

Abstract: Can. Ent. 105: 299-310 (1973) Twenty species of ground beetles (Family Carabidae) and one species of carrion beetle (Family Silphidae) were collected in six stations east of a kraft paper mill in Thunder Bay, Ontario, from May to August, 1971. The beetle population decreased markedly towards the mill. There was no apparent statistical difference in size variation of specimens near the mill and those further away.

“…This finding may be correlated with the SO 2 emissions from the Haldia industrial complex, which may have caused a decrease in the Chrysomelidae population on this plant. This result could be compared to the study of Freitag and Hastinsgs (1973), who claimed that there was an inverse relationship between ground beetle population numbers and SO 2 emission levels in the vicinity of a pulp mill. The leaf beetle, Melasoma lapponica, avoids willows in moderately polluted SO 2 areas .…”

“…Carabids have already received some use as indicators of perturbation. Freitag et al (1973) related decreased abundance of ground beetles to the pollution effects of a paper mill. Lavigne and Campion (1978) reported increased numbers of carabids in grassland perturbed by addition of water and nitrogen.…”

“…For instance, in surveys of large geographical areas where the objective is qualitative inventory and comparison of assemblages, pitfall trapping is the only realistic alternative presently available (Niemela et al 1990(Niemela et al , 1993. This kind of work may include assessing and monitoring environmental problems by using carabids as an "indicator7' group (Freitag et al 1973;Niemela et al 1990). In agricultural situations, where the subject of interest is the potential impact of predators in a crop (e.g.…”
