Ground-Based Millimeterwave Measurements of Mesosopheric and Stratospheric Ozone Employing an SIS Mixer Receiver.

Abstract: The J = 61 ,5 -60,6 (110.8359 GHz) line of mesospheric and stratospheric ozone has been observed by employing a newly developed microwave ozone sensor equipped with a Nb SIS mixer receiver in a temporal manner. The SIS mixer has a receiver noise of 34 K (SSB) and the spectrometer covers >60 MHz bandwidth with a frequency resolution of 35 kHz. Altitude profiles of ozone concentration retrieved from observed line profiles are compared with those in Keating et al. (1990)

“…In this sense, the method has an advantage for studies of strato-mesospheric 03. In recent years, it becomes strato-mesospheric 03 is measured extensively by millimeterwave radiometries thanks to recent advances of the techniques (Lobsiger and Kanzi, 1986;Zommerfelds et al, 1989;Ricaud et al, 1991;Parrish et al, 1992;Connor et al, 1994;Solomonov et al, 1994;Kawabata et al, 1994Kawabata et al, , 1996.…”

“…From these observations, we can obtain vertical profiles of ozone mixing ratio in the altitude range between 35 and 80 km. Some observational results obtained by frequency switching observations have already been published elsewhere (Kawabata et al, 1994(Kawabata et al, , 1996. By the load switching mode observations, we can obtain vertical profiles of ozone down to the altitude of 30 km.…”

“…Ground-based microwave 03 monitoring on Higashiyama Campus of the Nagoya University (35oN, 136oE) started in January 1992 by using ssuperconductive receiver. Brief description of the instrument can be found in Kawabata et al (1994), and Kawabata et al (1997). Detailed description of the instrument was given in .…”

“…The advantage of monitoring stratomesospheric 03 by ground-based microwave spec-troscopy is that it can be done throughout day and night without degradation by aerosols (Ricaud et al 1991(Ricaud et al , 1994Parrish et al 1992Parrish et al , 1998Connor et al 1994;Kawabata et al 1994Kawabata et al , 1996Kawabata et al , 1997Kawabata et al , 2000Tsou et al 1995;Sandor et al 1997;Pardo et al 1998;de La Noe et al 1998;Nagahama et al 1999).
