Ground and In-Flight Calibration of the OSIRIS-REx Camera Suite

Abstract: The OSIRIS-REx Camera Suite (OCAMS) onboard the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is used to study the shape and surface of the mission's target, asteroid (101955) Bennu, in support of the selection of a sampling site. We present calibration methods and results for the three OCAMS cameras-MapCam, PolyCam, and SamCam-using data from preflight and in-flight calibration campaigns. Pre-flight calibrations established a baseline for a variety of camera properties, including bias and dark behavior, flat fields, stray light, and… Show more

“…We identified morphologic evidence of mass movement on Bennu by assessing images of the surface taken by the PolyCam instrument, which is part of the OSIRIS‐REx Camera Suite (OCAMS) (Golish et al, 2020; Rizk et al, 2018). PolyCam is a narrow‐angle adjustable‐focus (field of view, 13.8–14.3 mrad) panchromatic (~500–800 nm) Ritchey‐Chrétien camera designed to image the low‐reflectance surface of Bennu.…”

“…Impact craters on Bennu were found by examining images acquired by the OSIRIS‐REx Camera Suite (OCAMS) (Golish et al, 2020; Rizk et al, 2018) during the Approach, Preliminary Survey, and Detailed Survey phases of the OSIRIS‐REx mission (Lauretta et al, 2017). OCAMS imaged Bennu globally at a range of illumination and viewing geometries (DellaGiustina et al, 2019), and multiple OSIRIS‐REx team members searched the images for craters (Walsh et al, 2019).…”

“…With a field of view five times that of PolyCam, MapCam images serve as context for PolyCam images acquired within the same observation. Golish et al (2020a) describe OCAMS pre-and in-flight calibration procedures. Ground calibrations were conducted for all three OCAMS cameras to characterize bias level, dark current rates, flat field response, stray light, and radiometric performance.…”

“…Principal point and radial distortion parameters in the PolyCam model vary as a function of focus position. Modelled differently from MapCam (Golish et al, 2020a), radial distortion is given as…”
