New oligofunctional surfactants prepared from ethyl 2-aminododecanoate hydrochloride and positional isomers of aromatic acid di-and trichlorides via amide bond formation, including also the monofunctional compound of comparision, have been synthesized. Surface properties of the new compounds, in particular critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface tension at the CMC, effectiveness, and maximum surface excess, were determined. Moreover, their effectiveness at flotation using the model mineral fluorite was studied. We found that the surfactant parameters clearly depend on the number and position of the amphiphilic subunits attached to the aromatic core. We also found that a bundling of amphiphilic subunits, as performed, is profitable in the flotation of fluorite and that effects of preorganization due to the proximity and geometric grouping of the amphiphilic subunits are of importance. As a rule, the more amphiphilic subunits are included in the surfactant structure, the more efficient is the collecting agent, involving approximate enhancements of fluorite flotation by powers of 10 when going from mono-to bi-and trifunctional surfactant analogs, respectively. Nevertheless, the surface properties of the newly synthesized surfactants do not directly correlate with the flotation data, which makes relations between surfactant structure and efficiency of fluorite flotation at the current stage of development difficult to determine. Future studies relating to this problem are suggested.

Akstract. In artificial photosynthesis the chief research goal is to duplicate the function of the photosynthetic unit in nature hut not its structural subunits. In this paper, light-induced electron-transfer processes of Ru-polypyridines as energy-storing systems, in the presence of suitable acceptors and catalysts, are described. New highly photostable photosensitizers are presented. A new approach using supramolecular (non-covalently) connected assemblies in addition to covalently linked systems for energy-storing processes is demonstrated. The use of classical and new Ru-complex assemblies in oxygen or hydrogen generation from water is dealt with. The efficiency of the new systems in the reduction of CO2 to methane is presented.

The 5,5′‐bis(hydroxyalkyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridines 4a–c (Scheme 1) were prepared either in one step (4b, 4c) or in four steps (4a) starting with 5,5′‐dimethyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine in each case. Reaction of 4a–c with mesyl chloride afforded the bis(mesylates) [–C5H3N–(CH2)n–CH2–OSO2Me]2 5a–c [n = 1 (a), 2 (b), 3 (c)], which could easily be transformed into the diphosphanes 6a–c by reaction with LiPPh2. Treatment of 6c, 6b with Cl2Pt(NCPh)2 and (RC6H4)2Pt(COD) according to the high‐dilution method resulted in the formation of the tetraphosphadiplatinacyclophanes [–C5H3N–(CH2)4–PPh2PtCl2PPh2–(CH2)4–C5H3N–]2 (7c) and [–C5H3N–(CH2)3–PPh2Pt(C6H4R)2PPh2–(CH2)3–C5H3N–]2 (8b, 9b) (8b: R = H, 9b: R = tBu), respectively (Scheme 2). The molecular structures of 8b and 9b were elucidated by X‐ray structural analyses. The noncoordinated bipyridine moieties in 8b were employed to encapsulate copper(I) to give the host/guest complex 10b (Scheme 3), which was investigated by FAB‐MS, NMR spectroscopy, and cyclovoltammetry. 10b exhibited a quasi‐reversible oxidation at E1/2 = –0.31 V and an electrodeposition‐redissolution redox system at E1/2 = –0.79 V, owing to the formation of copper at the surface of the working electrode.
