Gross examination and reporting of soft tissue tumours: evaluation of compliance with the UK Royal College of Pathologists soft tissue sarcoma dataset

Abstract: We found that while essential information was always included in reports, more specific details contributing to better quality reports such as more detailed macroscopic descriptions and a higher proportion of clinical summaries with radiological correlation were included in 2011 than 2006, despite increasing workload. Specimen handling, particularly of core biopsies, was also improved, reflecting the increasing need to conserve the maximum amount of patient material for molecular investigations.

“…In this setting, adequate sampling is of paramount importance (almost 1 sample per cm), including necrotic areas. The gross appearance of the tumour can be misleading, as areas that appear necrotic may represent myxoid or oedematous tissues (Shah et al, 2016;Rubin et al, 2010). A standardised system proposed in 2016 by the aforementioned EORTC-STBSG task force is summarised in Table 1 (Wardelmann et al, 2016).…”

“…The gross examination of these specimens was performed and recorded as per guidelines provided by the Royal College of pathologists UK. 13 For the purpose of histopathological evaluation, all the tissues from biopsies in sufficient size (up to 4-µm thickness) were processed under the standard conditions by passing in xylene for clearing and embedded in paraffin wax that were latter cut manually using rotary microtome. The collected tissues sections were then stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) for examination under the light microscope (Olympus BX51, Tokyo, Japan).…”

“…While on the other hand lack of awareness and diagnostic facilities, there is a trend of diagnosing of such cases at relatively advance stage in Pakistan. [12][13][14] The current study was designed with an objective to evaluate the histomorphometric features of oral region tumors. In the present study oral cancers were more prevalent among male (62.2%) compared with female (37.8%).…”
