Gross alpha and beta radioactivity in surface soil and drinkable water around a steel processing facility

Abstract: The mean gross alpha and beta activities in surface soil and drinkable water in the surrounding communities of a steel processing company, following a continuous exposure of workers and dwellers is determined using a low background Gas-less counting system with a solid state silicon PIPS detector for alpha and beta detection. The average activities for gross alpha and beta in soil ranged between 48.5 ± 15.8e64.0 ± 10.0Bq/kg and 411.5 ± 11.5e2710.0 ± 150.0Bq/kg respectively, whereas in water it ranged between 0… Show more

“…The results obtained in this study were slightly low when compared with the mean gross alpha and beta activity concentration reported by Jibiri and Fasae (2013), which reported that the gross beta activity concentration for farm soils from the northern part of Nigeria varied from 360.0 to 570.0 Bq/kg while for the alpha activities it varied from 8.0 to 40.0 Bq/kg. Also, the results obtained from this work are slightly lower when compared to the work done by Ogundare and Adekoya (2015). They reported that the mean gross alpha and beta activities in soil samples were between 32.0 and 64.0 Bq/kg and 411.5 and 2710.0 Bq/kg, respectively.…”

“…The average alpha activity of this study is also lower than the average alpha activity of 0.1173 Bql -1 in river Kaduna [1]. However, the value is lower than the mean alpha activity value reported for Okpare Creek [17] and is also lower than the alpha activity value of 6.7±0.074 Bql -1 reported for Opa River irrigation farmland [28].…”

“…Inappropriate management of radioactive materials during production of goods and services, utilizing radionuclides can result in surface contamination of the environment. Such contamination could be occasional, accidental or continuous [1]. Enhanced levels of these naturally occurring radionuclides might be present in the soil as well as surface and ground water near oil and gas production facilities.…”
