Grismadox gen. nov., a new Neotropical genus of ant-resembling spiders (Araneae, Corinnidae, Castianeirinae), including the description of two new species from Bolivia and Paraguay

Abstract: A new genus and two new species of ant-resembling castianeirine spiders are described from the Neotropics. Grismadoxgen. nov. comprises four species: Grismadox bauerisp. nov., and Grismadox mazaxoides (Perger & Duperré, 2021) comb. nov. from Bolivia, and Grismadox karuguasp. nov. (type species) and Grismadox mboitui (Pett, 2021) comb. nov. from Paraguay. All species are diagnosed and the new species are described and illustrated. Available ecological data suggests that all four species are primarily ep… Show more

“…For example, the SD was not observed in two other species of Myrmecotypus and their formicine models C. femoratus (Fabricius, 1804) and Dolichoderus bispinosus (Olivier, 1792) (Perger & Rubio, 2020b, 2021). Among the observed castianeirines, species of Castianeira , Grismadox, Mazax and Sphecotypus and their mostly ponerine ant models cannot move the abdomen under the forebody due to its length (see Perger & Perger, 2017; Perger & Pett, 2022; Pett et al., 2022). The four species of the only remaining castianeirine genus we observed in the study area, Myrmecium , have a similarly short and rounded abdomen as Myrmecotypus , but showed no SD.…”

“…Between 2018–2020, a preliminary survey into the spider fauna of the south-western Paraguayan department of Ñeembucú in the Humid Chaco ecoregion was initiated by the author. Several interesting castianeirines have been published from these collections including the discovery of two species of the genus Grismadox by Pett, Rubio & Perger (2022), and first confirmed males (and new records) of Castianeira spinipalpis Mello-Leitão, 1945 (Pett & Perger 2021). The objective of this paper is to report on a new species of Castianeira , based on four male specimens, two from Ñeembucú in Paraguay, and two Bolivian specimens loaned to the author from Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe (Germany).…”
