“…The strength values that were recorded (Table 6.3) are within the normal range for the subjects in the reference sample Fain & Weatherford 2016;Nilsen et al 2012), although they are slightly lower than the mean values in the literature. This is probably because the sample consists of persons who carry out work that does not require manual strength (academic setting or similar).…”

“…The larger proportion of female participants is in accordance with the imbalanced prevalence of HOA among men and women (35), and may be further explained by the fact that men in general are stronger than women (27). Thus, even if men with HOA experience reduced grip strength, the majority probably still have sufficient hand strength to manage their daily activities and therefore may be less likely to seek health care due to their HOA.…”

“…In general, participants had a long disease duration (mean 15.2 years (5,41)), and approximately one-third or more had moderate to severe radiographic OA (KL ‡grade 3) in their left or right CMC1 joint (Tables I and II). A total of 35% and 60% of the participants had subluxation in their right or left CMC joint respectively, and grip and pinch strength for participants were approximately 60% of that of an age-and gender-matched healthy population (27) (Table II).…”

“…Both RA and HOA are more common in women than in men, with a gender ratio of 3:1 and a 2:1, respectively [30]. There is also a well-known difference between muscle strength in men and in women [31], which is why this study was performed on women.…”
