“…While many of the risk factors (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder and ACEs) in younger age groups are present in older adults, they also experience unique age-related risk factors for SUD such as experiencing grief and loss more frequently, due to deaths among family and friends [ 40 ]. This sense of loss can also lead to physical and social isolation which then leads to SUD [ 41 ].…”

“…Other researchers partially collapsed sexual orientations into one homogeneous group. Furr, Johnson, and Sloan‐Goodall () investigated grief and loss among individuals in substance abuse treatment and reported categories of sexual orientations as follows: lesbian or gay ( n = 4), bisexual ( n = 3), other ( n = 1), and heterosexual ( n = 53). Note that lesbians and gay men were combined as one category, but it is unknown how many were lesbians versus gay men.…”

“…Moreover, 83.2% of SUD patients (alcohol, cocaine, and heroin dependence) stated that after suffering a loss of a significant person, they increased drug consumption [27]. On the other hand, Furr et al [28] differentiated between different types of losses: losses prior to addiction, losses while abusing substances, and losses associated with entering treatment. They interviewed 68 addicted patients using a self-report instrument.…”

“…In this sense, there is a danger of diminishing, minimizing, or downplaying all that addiction entails. Following Furr et al [28] and Beechem [43], it is also important to distinguish between different kinds of losses: prior to SUD diagnosis, while abusing substance and those losses associated with entering addiction treatment centers. Moreover, some studies focus on bereavement before SUD diagnosis.…”
