Grid Requirements for the Integration of Biomedical Information Resources for Health Applications

Abstract: Grid infrastructures offer advanced features for the deployment of collaborative computational environments across virtual organizations. New Grid developments are in line with the problem of multiple site information integration. From the INFOGENMED point of view, Grid infrastructures need to evolve to implement structured data access services and semantic content description and discovery.

“…These will potentially reduce the "brain drain" syndrome that has plagued the African scientific communities in recent years ,and revolutionize the pursuits of pharmacological sciences. This includes key areas such as the integration of biomedical information enhancing for instance the rational use of medicines which will benefit all SSA communities [60]. Key areas will also include assessing prescribing against agreed national guidelines including using tools such as DU90% as well as assessing the extent of off label prescribing and potential drug-drug interactions as a prelude to developing future activities based on on-line support [61][62][63][64][65][66][67].…”

“…distributed computing of the user’s tasks. Thus, it is a derivative of the development and maturation of the Internet [14]. In analogue to the implementation of power supply “grids” that continuously supply households with electrical power independently where the power has been generated a Grid assures standardized information transfer between different nodes.…”
