Grid Reconfiguration Method for Off-Grid DOA Estimation

Abstract: Off-grid algorithms for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation have become attractive because of their advantages in resolution and efficiency over conventional ones. In this paper, we propose a grid reconfiguration direction of arrival (GRDOA) estimation method based on sparse Bayesian learning. Unlike other off-grid methods, the grid points of GRDOA are treated as dynamic parameters. The number and position of the grid points are varied iteratively via a root method and a fission process. Then, the grid gets … Show more

“…However, the DOAs are not usually exactly on the grid, which leads to the off-grid gap problem, as shown in Figure 2 [55]. In general, there are two kinds of off-grid methods to handle this problem: One is to use a fixed grid with joint estimation of the sparse signal and the grid offset [45,46]; the other one is to use a dynamic grid [18,47,48]. Compared with fixed grid methods, dynamic grid methods have the advantages of lower computational complexity and higher accuracy.…”

“…Both GRDOA [48] and the proposed method are off-grid DOA estimation methods based on SBL. The discrete grid points are regarded as the dynamic parameters in both methods to reduce the model error, and the performance degradation in RSBL [47] caused by middle located DOAs is effectively alleviated in both methods.…”

“…The quantisation error is taken as real-valued and assumed to be uniformly distributed. The off-grid AoA refinement can be performed optimally if the coarse AoA estimates are in the correct number and all within the trust region [24,29]. To satisfy these conditions and obtain off-grid AoA refinement, large numbers of initial bias hampers and earlier iterations are required, and this, in turn, increases the computational burden and execution time. This work proposes two new AoA methods to estimate the directions of the incident signals on an antenna array.…”
