Harmonic adaptability (HA) capability is required for large-scale onshore and offshore wind turbines (WTs) connected to the grid. To ensure that the distortion of the harmonic voltage at the grid access point generated by grid simulator is in accordance with the required value, this paper proposes an on-site HA remote testing method for offshore WTs to eliminate submarine cable effects. The deviation compensation method detects the integer harmonic voltage distortion based on instantaneous reactive power theory, and the deviation from the required value is compensated by series active power filter. In order to further reduce the capacity of the designed device, integer harmonics close to the resonant frequency are suppressed by the selective harmonic damping (SHD) method initially. Owing to the attenuation of extreme amplification, the deviation determining the equipment capacity is decreased correspondingly. As a small synthesized impedance working for the selected frequency can suppress the amplification significantly, a low power ratings design for the SHD method can be achieved, and undesired resonance can be avoided. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method can make the harmonic distortion within the error tolerance.

Voltage Impact of a Wave Energy Converter on an Unbalanced Distribution Grid and Corrective Actions

Renewable energy is steadily increasing its penetration level in electric power systems. Wind and solar energy have reached a high degree of maturity, and their impacts on the grid are well known. However, this is not the case for emerging sources like wave energy. This work explores the impact of the fluctuating power injected by a wave energy converter on the distribution grid voltage and proposes a strategy for mitigating the induced voltage fluctuations. The paper describes the mechanics of how a fluctuating active power injection leads to grid voltage fluctuations and presents an unbalanced three-phase power flow tool that allows one to quantitatively analyze the voltage evolution at every phase and bus of a distribution grid driven by this power injection. The paper also proposes a corrective action for mitigating the voltage fluctuations that makes use of the hardware resources already available in the wave energy converter, by means of a control strategy on the reactive capability of the grid-side inverter. The use of a STATCOM as additional reactive compensation equipment is also explored. The effectiveness of the proposal is assessed in the IEEE 13-bus test feeder showing that, in some cases, the wave energy converter by itself is able to mitigate the voltage fluctuations that it causes. If not, a STATCOM can provide the extra reactive capability needed.

The constant-frequency double-rotor generator has the potential to be used in the marine energy conversions, such as tides and marine current power generation system due to the advantages. However, there are two different rotational speed movement boundaries in the constant-frequency double-rotor generator, especially the inner moving part boundary between the inner wound rotor and outer permanent magnet rotor. This complicates the finite element analysis and greatly increases the analysis time. In this article, a new finite element analysis method based on double boundaries interpolation multiple reference frame is proposed. The principle of the interpolation multiple reference frame method is introduced, and the analysis and comparison with the traditional method are carried out. The analysis results show that the interpolation multiple reference frame method simplifies the preprocessing procedure, reduces computation time, ensures high calculation accuracy, and has the potential to be applied in all kinds of multiple mechanical port machines.
