Grey literature archiving pattern in open access (OA) repositories with special emphasis on Indian OA repositories

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to examine the grey literature archiving pattern at open-access repositories with special reference to Indian open-access repositories. Design/methodology/approach The Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE) was used to collect data from different document types archived by open-access repositories across the world. Data were collected by advanced search and browse features available at the BASE on document types, the number of repositories by country wise and Indian academic and rese… Show more

“…The results also showed that there are more repositories in India than in China (Ahmed and Rather, 2007;Lone et al, 2008;Mittal and Mahesh, 2008;Wani et al, 2009;Pinfield, 2009;Tripathi and Jeevan, 2011;Roy et al, 2013;Singh, 2016;Ali et al, 2018;Bashir et al, 2019;Khan et al, 2022). Shivaram and Biradar, 2018 Investigated the practice of archiving gray literature at open-access Indian repositories. The results showed that reviewed literature is mostly archived in open-access repositories around the globe.…”

“…Another group of researchers [16], [17] focuses on whether online literature can be used for improving public law or policies. Besides this, research is also being conducted on how online repositories are indexing the grey literature with respect to specific location such as in India [18] and Africa [19]. Our study has multiple objectives and fills the research gap in software engineering by researching (i) the extent of usage of grey literature in systematic literature reviews in software engineering; (ii) categorization strategies and quality assessment criteria for grey literature and (ii) viability of Google Scholar for searching grey literature.…”

“…Ferreras-Fernández et al (2016) "indicate that OA IRs become an advantageous channel of scientific communication to 'grey literature' like dissertations and PhD theses, because openness increases visibility and use and also produces a significant citation rate". Recent studies (Farace andSchöpfel, 2015: Marsolek et al, 2018;Myska and Savelka, 2013;Shivaram and Biradar, 2019) also confirm the presence of grey literature in OARs. "There are some subject or disciplinary repositories also that specialize in indexing and archiving 'grey literature'.…”
