Greenway Cyclists’ Visual Perception and Landscape Imagery Assessment

Abstract: Greenway is a kind of corridors in the city that takes natural elements as the main constituent foundation and connects open spaces with functions such as leisure and recreation. The assessment of the built greenway is a review of the past construction experiences, and it is also a supplement and improvement to the future greenway planning concept system, which has important academic and application value. This study will explore how greenway design factors influenced the local cyclists’ perception of the land… Show more

“…In modern society, people face a range of challenges that may lead to psychological and other health issues [ 1 ]. Numerous studies have demonstrated that urban green space can promote health [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. The mechanisms of the positive relationship between green spaces and health include alleviation of mental stress, enhancement of social cohesion, promotion of physical activity, and mitigation of potentially hazardous environmental exposures (such as air and noise pollution) [ 5 ].…”

“…On the other hand, preference reflects individual inclinations and choices based on that interpretation [17]. In the field of landscape studies, visual perception research delves into the fundamental concept of beauty, exploring aspects such as goodness, attractiveness, and preference [18]. The relationship between the two is complex, with each influencing and shaping the other in a constant feedback loop.…”

“…Generally, most studies divide road landscapes into natural and cultural categories [4]. For highways or general road landscapes, users prefer natural landscapes more than cultural or manmade landscapes [2,5,13,18,22,24]. In natural landscapes on highways, mountains, forests, and green fields play an active role in preference [5].…”

“…A correction factor has been attributed to each land-use class: positive (+0.1) if it constitutes an added value to the routes in terms of landscape perception, negative (−0.1) if it constitutes an unfavorable character, null (0) if it has mainly a neutral impact. The attribution of these correction factors to existing routes was based on the concept of visual landscape interference [47,50]. According to this concept, an 'area of influence' was defined to reflect the physical limit of perception of the landscape crossed by a potential user.…”
