In recent years, precision agriculture and smart farming have been deployed by leaps and bounds as arable land has become increasingly scarce. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), by the year 2050, farming in the world should grow by about one-third above current levels. Therefore, farmers have intensively used fertilizers to promote crop growth and yields, which has adversely affected the nutritional improvement of foodstuffs. To address challenges related to productivity, environmental impact, food safety, crop losses, and sustainability, mobile robots in agriculture have proliferated, integrating mainly path planning and crop information gathering processes. Current agricultural robotic systems are large in size and cost because they use a computer as a server and mobile robots as clients. This article reviews the use of mobile robotics in farming to reduce costs, reduce environmental impact, and optimize harvests. The current status of mobile robotics, the technologies employed, the algorithms applied, and the relevant results obtained in smart farming are established. Finally, challenges to be faced in new smart farming techniques are also presented: environmental conditions, implementation costs, technical requirements, process automation, connectivity, and processing potential. As part of the contributions of this article, it was possible to conclude that the leading technologies for the implementation of smart farming are as follows: the Internet of Things (IoT), mobile robotics, artificial intelligence, artificial vision, multi-objective control, and big data. One technological solution that could be implemented is developing a fully autonomous, low-cost agricultural mobile robotic system that does not depend on a server.

Technologies once applied exclusively in conventional systems have maximized gains in hydroponic systems; however, they still need information for proper use. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of foliar application of thiamine and niacin on growth and gas exchange activities in two lettuce cultivars in an ebb and flow hydroponic system. The completely randomized design (CRD) was used with four treatments and eight replications. The treatments were as follows: T1 - control, T2 - thiamine at a concentration of 200 mg L-1, T3 - niacin at 200 mg L-1, and T4 - thiamine and niacin combined at 100 mg L-1 of each vitamin. Each experimental plot consisted of a lettuce plant. The combined application of thiamine and niacin stood out, increasing the activity of gas exchange of lettuce plants and increasing by about 30% the fresh mass, concerning the control, for both cultivars, followed by the isolated application of niacin. For thiamine, the application alone did not result in significant changes. The vitamins affect the morphophysiology of lettuce, where the use of niacin has the potential for use in hydroponic production systems. Its combined use with thiamine increases this potential, with a synergistic effect between the compounds being verified.

This study evaluates the influence of the four seasons and twelve months of the year on the micrometeorological variables of global solar radiation, air temperature, and relative air humidity in different protected environments for plant production. The protected environment types and the characteristics of the shade screen modify the indoor air temperature. This environment provides greater relative humidity. The global solar radiation percentages in the environments were: full sun (100%); black screen with 30% shading (47.3%); greenhouse with LDPE + 22-30% shading screen under the film (38.1%); aluminized screen with 35% shading (36.9%) and greenhouse with LDPE + 42-50% shading screen under the film (26.9%). The micrometeorological conditions of environments such as air temperature, relative air humidity, and global solar radiation in the seasons of year are similar to the behavior verified in the monthly test. Air temperatures and global solar radiation formed two distinct groups, with the spring and summer seasons being considered one group and autumn and winter another group. The summer and autumn periods showed the highest relative humidity compared to the winter and spring periods, with a low percentage of air humidity. Seasons in the study region are not as well defined as those in the northern hemisphere.
