“…The challenges that Peruvian peatlands face are substantially different from those in Southeast Asia. Therein Southeast Asia, peatlands are under great pressure from agricultural expansion, artificial drainage, and fires, which result in considerable GHG emissions (Gaveau et al 2014;Hergoualc'h and Verchot 2014). In contrast, anthropogenic degradation of peatland in the Peruvian Amazon is mostly related to recurrent harvesting of M. flexuosa palms from natural stands without drainage or fire.…”

“…Bare peatland consistently emit higher CO 2 than under forested land. These results were supported by Warren et al (2016) and Hergoualch et al (2013) that land cover change could impact on increasing soil carbon emission. These results indicate that forest canopy, beside its roles in sequestering atmospheric carbon, can also be beneficial in reducing CO 2 respiration from peatland soil.…”

“…Selain itu kurangnya pengetahuan tentang sistem pertanian dan perkebunan ramah lingkungan menyebabkan masih terjadinya bencana asap setiap tahun dibeberapa provinsi di Indonesia. Asap kebakaran hutan dan lahan gambut dapat menjalar sehingga mengganggu sistem transportasi penerbangan, aktivitas ekonomi dan kesehatan masyarakat seperti infeksi saluran pernapasan akut (ISPA), diare dan gatal-gatal (Sumantri, 2003;Aiken, 2004;Hergoualc'h and Verchot, 2013).…”
