Greener electric vehicles with VANETs

Abstract

Due to the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and concerns about increasing oil prices, vehicles manufacturers have produced vehicles with either hybrid technology or full electric vehicles (FEVs). However, power plants that energize EVs generate emissions. Also, electricity prices are increasing. Therefore, more efforts in different technologies are needed to save more energy.Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks(VANETs) offer the potential for saving energy. The development of VANETs allow for the exchange of messages for green purposes, such as when a VANET informs a driver of the shortest, less congested path, which can save a significant amount of energy as the car needs not idle along the more congested route. Thus, VANETs offer a new approach to green technology: instead of making a vehicle green, an entire group of vehicles can be green. This paper aims to study in-depth the use of VANETs to provide green solutions for EVs.
