GreenBicycling: A Smartphone-Based Public Bicycle Sharing System for Healthy Life

Abstract: Gas-consumed urban transportation causes the problems of environment pollution and traffic congestion.Bicycling is an alternative transportation way for short-distance movement, which is a green and healthy style. Some modern cities are building Public Bicycle Sharing System (PBSS), so that inhabitants and tourists can temporarily use bicycles anywhere in the city. In this paper, GreenBicycling, a smartphone-based Public Bicycle Sharing System for healthy life is developed. GreenBicycling aims to improve the u… Show more

“…At present, almost everything humans do is through the internet and some modern cities are using the internet of things (IoT) technologies for building an intelligent active transportation system (Brincat et al, 2019). Accordingly, IoT-based facilities relate to active modes of transportation are playing a substantial role in the future of sustainable mobility all around the world (Zhao et al, 2013).…”

“…Cycling is a green and healthy style for short-distance movement, which has been studied in [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Eisenman et al [ 13 ] designed and implemented a mobile networked sensing system, called BikeNet, for cyclists to provide the healthiness of a given route, such as pollution levels, allergen levels, noise levels, and roughness of the terrain.…”

“…Shin et al [ 14 ] designed a sensor-based tracking system for cyclist groups to provide each bicycle with a green power source, establish the riding path without a GPS device, and monitor cyclist trajectories and group positions. Zhao et al [ 15 ] developed a smartphone-based public bicycle sharing system for cyclists to query the numbers of bicycles in rental spots and predict the available number of returning bicycles. In addition, cyclists can estimate their calorie expenditure during a riding trip and keep tracking their physical exercises.…”

“…They revealed imbalance states in bike distribution that can be understood in terms of system structure and activity dynamics. Several studies have analysed and proposed some methods to address the imbalance issue from different points of view, such as the optimization of fleet routing and the number of fleets [67], a proposal for giving incentives to users to rebalance [68], implementing imbalance prediction [17,27,69], and proposing journey advice for users [108,114,115]. Some of those studies will be reviewed in the next subsections.…”
