Green vehicle technology to enhance the performance of a European port: A simulation model with a cost-benefit approach

Abstract: In this paper, we study the impact of using a new intelligent vehicle technology on the performance and total cost of a European port, in comparison with existing vehicle systems like trucks. Intelligent autonomous vehicles (IAVs) are a new type of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) with better maneuverability and a special ability to pick up/drop o containers by themselves. To identify the most economical eet size for each type of vehicle to satisfy the port's performance target, and also to compare their impac… Show more

“…Most of the issues analyzed involve both PAs and shipping lines (for example, water quality, air quality, waste management, energy consumption, oil spills, anti-fouling paints, and dust emission) [40][41][42][43] rather than those that are strictly linked to ports, such as noise or dredging [44].…”

“…Strategic level decisions include feasibility analysis, justification of investment and overall costs, and identification and utilization of relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Kavakeb et al (2015) provide a study of IAVs in port container terminals and comment the capabilities of better maneuverability and increased containers' pick up/drop loading performance. Handling and logistics cost in container terminals accounts for up to 50% of the total terminal operation cost.…”

“…The port of Rotterdam uses IoT for repair and maintenance, Hamburg uses 3D printing applications, the port of Singapore uses cloud computing and big data, Antwerp employs blockchains, and while the port of Los Angeles has offered digitalized information for all maritime sectors [82], [83]. A study was carried out by [84] regarding the green performance of intelligent autonomous vehicles. It is a new type of automated guided vehicle with some better features such as the ability to pick up/drop off automatically, maneuvering flexibility in 180-degree directions, no need for any fixed track, embedded with sensor technology to detect moving and static obstacles around.…”
