Green Tea Suppresses Brain Aging

Abstract: Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that the intake of green tea is effective in reducing the risk of dementia. The most important component of green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Both EGCG and epigallocatechin (EGC) have been suggested to cross the blood–brain barrier to reach the brain parenchyma, but EGCG has been found to be more effective than EGC in promoting neuronal differentiation. It has also been suggested that the products of EGCG decomposition by the intestinal microbiota promote t… Show more

“…A variety of actions of EGCG have been described, particularly in the relation to cancer [ 116 , 117 , 118 , 119 , 120 , 121 , 122 ]; however, an improvement associated with delivery of EGCG has been also observed in many other disorders such as brain aging [ 123 , 124 ], neurological diseases including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases [ 125 , 126 ], cardiovascular diseases [ 127 , 128 , 129 ], and metabolic diseases including obesity [ 130 , 131 ] and diabetes mellitus [ 132 , 133 ].…”

“…Much research has been conducted on the functionality of green tea components [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ], and the importance of green tea as a form of preventive medicine has attracted attention. However, differences in the functionality of green tea can occur depending on the type and quality of the tea.…”

“…With the advent of an aging society, the prevention of aging, especially brain aging, is an important issue not only for improving the quality of life of individuals, but also for social and economic reasons. Using mouse models of aging, we found that the long-term intake of catechins, a green tea polyphenol, inhibits oxidative stress in vivo and suppresses brain atrophy and decline in learning and memory associated with aging [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. In this study, we investigated the effects of coffee polyphenols (CPP or chlorogenic acid) and milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) in the prevention of brain aging in senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8, SAMP8, which shows cognitive decline and the accumulation of amyloid-β in the brain at a relatively early stage.…”
