SummaryObjectivesObesity is the accumulation of excessive visceral and subcutaneous fat in the body. The herbal formulation can help treat obesity and our study aims to evaluate the acute basic biological effects of herbal formulation to control obesity.MethodsAntiobesity herbal formulation, prepared by the combination of Saussurea lappa root, Betula utilis bark, Aconitum heterophyllum root, Bunium periscum seed, and Bauhinia variegate leaf (4:3:1:1:1), was carried out on Wistar male and female rats. Obesity was induced in the rats by feeding the Chow diet, and the effect of herbal formulation on obesity was studied. The effect on obesity was measured by analyzing variables like weight, water intake, pellet count, hematological parameters, renal function test, liver function test, and lipid profile test.ResultsIn the study, it was observed that the female rats treated at the highest dose showed a significantly (p<0.005) higher decrease in weight compared to male rats after ten days. Thefood intake, hemoglobin, renal, liver function and lipid profile showed significant improvement after the intake of herbal formulation.ConclusionsFrom the above results, it was inferred that herbal formulation increased the activity of metabolism, which is helpful in weight reduction; moreover, it has some beneficial biological effects.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is a steatotic liver disease associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS), especially obesity, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. MASLD in 43–44% of patients can progress to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), and 7–30% of these cases will progress to liver scarring (cirrhosis). To date, the mechanism of MASLD and its progression is not completely understood and there were no therapeutic strategies specifically tailored for MASLD/MASH until March 2024. The conventional antiobesity and antidiabetic pharmacological approaches used to reduce the progression of MASLD demonstrated favorable peripheral outcomes but insignificant effects on liver histology. Alternatively, phyto-synthesized metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) are now being explored in the treatment of various liver diseases due to their unique bioactivities and reduced bystander effects. Although phytonanotherapy has not been explored in the clinical treatment of MASLD/MASH, MNPs such as gold NPs (AuNPs) and silver NPs (AgNPs) have been reported to improve metabolic processes by reducing blood glucose levels, body fat, and inflammation. Therefore, these actions suggest that MNPs can potentially be used in the treatment of MASLD/MASH and related metabolic diseases. Further studies are warranted to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of phytonanomedicine before clinical application.

Secondary metabolite compounds in plants act as bioreductors in the metal reduction process and complement inorganic reductants. This study studied the characteristics of copper nanoparticles using Carica Dieng (Carica pubescens) seed extract. The synthesis of copper nanoparticles was carried out using the green synthesis method by reducing CuSO4 10 mM with distilled water extract from Carica Dieng (Carica pubescens) seeds. The Synthesis was carried out with the ratio of the composition of the extract and CuSO4 solution 1:3 at pH 10. Nanoparticles were then characterized using UV-Vis spectrophotometer and PSA (Particle Size Analyzer) instruments. The characterization results using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer showed a maximum absorption peak at a wavelength of 535 nm; the wavelength is included in the wavelength range of copper nanoparticles, which ranges from 500-700 nm. The particle size distribution analyzed using PSA shows an average size of 14.49 nm; this size is included in the range of nanoparticle sizes, which is between 1-100 nm, thus proving that nanoparticles have been successfully formed, the Poly Dispersity Index (PDI) value obtained is 0.1943 which indicates that the nanoparticle sample is categorized as homogeneous so that it has uniform size uniformity.
