Green Synthesis and Photocatalytic Dye Degradation Activity of CuO Nanoparticles

Abstract: The degradation of dyes is a difficult task due to their persistent and stable nature; therefore, developing materials with desirable properties to degrade dyes is an important area of research. In the present study, we propose a simple, one-pot mechanochemical approach to synthesize CuO nanoparticles (NPs) using the leaf extract of Seriphidium oliverianum, as a reducing and stabilizing agent. The CuO NPs were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence (PL)… Show more

“…Thymus vulgaris leaf and citrus lemon seed extracts were employed to obtain ZnO nanoparticles that are used for the degradation of MB and Sunfix Red and Remazole Brilliant Blue R, respectively. Similarly, the photocatalytic activities of Seriphidium oliverianum, Ocimum tenuiflorum, and papaya/lemon tea extracts-based CuO nanoparticles were investigated against methyl orange. For this purpose, an extract obtained from Stevia rebaudiana, a plant species belonging to the Stevia genus within the Asteraceae family, was employed for the synthesis of MO nanoparticles.…”

“…Semiconducting nanoparticle (SNP)-based photocatalysis exhibits substantial potential for heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation-based AOPs owing to its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, nontoxic nature, impressive degradation efficiency, and outstanding stability . Numerous SNPs, including ZnO, CuO, TiO 2 , NiO, and SnO 2, have been harnessed as photocatalysts to eliminate organic dyes. Among these, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has garnered significant attention in photocatalysis . In 1972, Fujishima and Honda first suggested employing TiO 2 in photocatalysis, illustrating its capability to split water and generate hydrogen under light exposure .…”

“…Several methods were employed for dyes degradation such as ion exchange, ozonolysis, chemical oxidation, photocatalytic degradation [24]. But, the photocatalytic degradation of dyes via a semiconductor photocatalyst such as metal NPs is considered green and economical approach [25]. Algae are commonly employed in industrial applications; however, their utilization for NPs creation at the international level has not been extensively employed [26].…”
