Green maintainability design criteria for nanostructured titanium dioxide (TiO2) façade coatings

Abstract: Purpose Nanostructured titanium dioxide (TiO2) coatings can potentially address the current surge in façade cleaning cost, maintenance and labour problems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate potential maintainability issues and design challenges concerning the effective performance of TiO2 façade coatings’ hydrophilic properties, especially in tropical environments such as Singapore. This paper aims to establish a list of green maintainability design criteria to help minimise future TiO2 façade coatin… Show more

“…Design decisions have the potential to significantly influence the future maintenance requirements of the facility, which, in turn, affects the total cost (Ali et al , 2013; Dunston and Williamson, 1999; Waziri, 2016; Ladinski, 2017; Jandali and Sweis, 2018a, b). Accordingly, consideration for the maintainability of the facility at the early design stages increases the likelihood of lowered levels of maintenance at the operational stage of the facility (Chew et al , 2004; Abeydeera et al , 2017; De Silva et al , 2012; Wang et al , 2013; Chew et al , 2017). Furthermore, given that contemporary facilities are expected to meet higher standards and users’ expectations, the influential role of the design stage has become even more pronounced compared to past years (Chew et al , 2004).…”

“…Research in this area has revealed that there is a basic level of understanding surrounding the benefits that may be reaped if a transition to the green building was made. The level of ignorance in this field has proven to be a large contributor to the effects on the environment from the construction industry (Zhang and Canning, 2011;Gharehbaghi, 2017;Chew and Conejos, 2017;Eckelman et al, 2018).…”

“…Nanostructured titanium dioxide façade coatings Nanostructured titanium dioxide particles are primarily in the 1-100 nanometers size range and are transparent and not inert (Bakker, 2008), which has self-cleaning function that washes away dirt through photocatalytic activity based on UV radiation and hydrophilicity (Chew et al, 2017a). Nano-facade coating is used as an anti-staining coating on building facades to allow ease in maintenance and less maintenance cost than ordinary façade coatings (Midtdal and Jelle, 2013).…”
