Green Infrastructures for Urban Water System: Balance between Cities and Nature

Abstract: Urban water systems face severe challenges such as urbanisation, population growth and climate change. Traditional technical solutions, i.e., pipe-based, grey infrastructure, have a single purpose and are proven to be unsustainable compared to multi-purpose nature-based solutions. Green Infrastructure encompasses on-site stormwater management practices, which, in contrast to the centralised grey infrastructure, are often decentralised. Technologies such as green roofs, walls, trees, infiltration trenches, wetl… Show more

“…It also has the ability to contribute positively to the stabilization of microclimates and the mitigating of urban climate extremes [81]. Urban green infrastructure may also serve to regulate storm water run-off in cities by moderating the flow of surface run-off, which can cause erosion [82].…”

“…City planners must design and deliver systems resilient to climate change in the urban environment. Engineering concepts such as Green Infrastructure (GI), Best Management Practices (BMP), and Low Impact Development (LID) are examples of fundamentals applicable to engineering projects and decision-making focused on sustainability and resilience [1,2]. By using GI, for example, one can decrease runoff from roads, control diffuse pollution, and even sequester carbon [3].…”
