The current paper reviews the applications of luminescence bioassays for monitoring the results of low-intensity exposures which produce a stimulative effect. The impacts of radioactivity of different types (alpha, beta, and gamma) and bioactive compounds (humic substances and fullerenols) are under consideration. Bioassays based on luminous marine bacteria, their enzymes, and fluorescent coelenteramide-containing proteins were used to compare the results of the low-intensity exposures at the cellular, biochemical, and physicochemical levels, respectively. High rates of luminescence response can provide (1) a proper number of experimental results under comparable conditions and, therefore, proper statistical processing, with this being highly important for “noisy” low-intensity exposures; and (2) non-genetic, i.e., biochemical and physicochemical mechanisms of cellular response for short-term exposures. The results of cellular exposures were discussed in terms of the hormesis concept, which implies low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition of physiological functions. Dependencies of the luminescence response on the exposure time or intensity (radionuclide concentration/gamma radiation dose rate, concentration of the bioactive compounds) were analyzed and compared for bioassays of different organization levels.

Different methods are adopted for the quantitative detection of chemicals in the blood. One of which is discussed here, i.e., the fluorescent probes that are preferred in biological systems owing to their sensitivity, high selectivity, elevated spatiotemporal resolution, and noninvasiveness. In recent years, for the identification of various chemicals, a large number of probes have been designed. For the detection as well as identification of fluorescent probes, sulfides, different chemicals such as iron, glucose, glutathione etc., in the blood are discussed. The maximum detection limits of newly synthesized fluorescent probes for different chemical analysis are studied and comparatively analyzed. Different parameters like pH, incubation time, mixing time, the detection limit of the fluorescent probes is also explored.

GFP is a naturally occurring fluorescent protein that absorbs a certain wave-length of light (absorption maxima= 395 and 475nm) and emits green fluorescence (emission maxima= 510nm). Later, similar red, yellow, orange, cyan, blue colored natural as well as laboratorydeveloped fluorescent proteins were discovered. Due to their fluorescent property these are widely used as bio-marker in diverse field of biological sciences. Green fluorescent protein is coded from a heritable gene known as gfp. GFP as well as Aequorin, a blue light emitting protein, were discovered from Aequorea victoria. Aequorin is used as calcium probe in modern researches. Activated chromophores which are located in the core of the fluorescent proteins, are responsible for their fluorescence emission. After accumulating several researchdata, here, we discuss a precise synopsis on immense potential of GFPs and its variants in the modern sciences such as cancer biology, drug discovery etc. also including the historical background and their structural and chemical aspects.
