Green Cleaning: An Essential Aspect of Malaysian Green Buildings

Abstract: This paper discusses the importance of green cleaning for green buildings during the operations and maintenance stage. The investment on green buildings is often driven by the aim to reduce energy consumption. However, many tend to overlook the importance of the operations and maintenance aspect of the building, particularly the green cleaning aspect. Green cleaning is a major contributor to Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) where IEQ is one of the important criteria that should be considered during the asses… Show more

“…Poor working postures, such as reaching and stooping; a lack of task variety and doing the same activity daily; ergonomic issues and improper workspace design; poor cleaning tool design; and poor work organization, such as long working hours, low salaries and inconvenient working times, are all factors that contribute to the risk of occupational diseases (Kumar, 2006; Pelissier et al , 2014; Rathi et al , 2017; Wami et al , 2019). Cleaning products that are ecologically friendly and cleaning equipment that is ergonomically designed will reduce health issues, produce a healthy interior atmosphere and ultimately improve the health, morale and productivity of cleaning personnel and occupants (Zainol et al , 2015). “…However, some may not be aware that conventional cleaning programs are energy intensive (Cox et al , 2009), and at the same time, consume more water to clean after using the cleaning product. By implementing green cleaning, buildings can save up to 30% due to more efficient water use (BETCO, 2008; Zainol et al , 2015). The use of green cleaning equipment, for example, an ultralow-flow dispensing floor scrubber (which allows the cleaner to pick where to apply extra water or detergent), can save up to 70% on water usage (Kohls, 2011).…”

“…Green building is developed to comply the needs of the current and avoid the negative impact to the future generations while fulfilling their needs [7]. Green building is defined as the building which is designed, constructed, and maintained in order to reduce water, energy consumption and construction costs by improving the efficiency and sustainability of the building systems and reduce the negative impact of buildings to the environment [8]. There are three pillars in sustainable green building concept which act as the objectives to achieve sustainability.…”

“…However, some people are unaware that traditional cleaning programmes use a lot of energy (Cox et al , 2009) and use a lot of water to clean after they use the cleaning solution. Buildings can save up to 30% by using green cleaning owing to more efficient water use (BETCO, 2008; Zainol et al , 2015). Environmental cleaning technology, such as an ultra-low flow dispensing floor scrubber (which allows the cleaner to choose where to apply extra water or detergent), can reduce water consumption by up to 70%.…”
