Green and Bio-Based Solvents

Abstract: Chemical reactions and many of the procedures of separation and purification employed in industry, research or chemistry teaching utilize solvents massively. In the last decades, with the birth of Green Chemistry, concerns about the employment of solvents and the effects on human health, as well as its environmental impacts and its dependence on non-renewable raw materials for manufacturing most of them, has drawn the attention of the scientific community. In this work, we review the concept of green solvent a… Show more

“…The selection of ar eactions olvent is important in am yriad of synthetic processes to make chemical andp harmaceutical products. [1,2] From an industrial point of view,s afety,h ealth and environmental aspects are seriously taken into account in addition to the general requirements of solubility,s tability,r emovability (volatility), and compatibility of reactants. [3][4][5][6][7] The traditional ethereal solvents, such as diethyl ether (Et 2 O), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and 1,4-dioxane, which are still used in many laboratory experiments today,a re highly recommended to be replaced by safer and greener solvents in pilot-scale synthesis, in order to avoid the risks of inflammability,e xplosion from peroxideb uild-up, and toxic exposure.…”

“…Unlike ILs, which are made up of one type Bio-Solvents: Synthesis, Industrial Production and Applications DOI: http://dx.doi.org /10.5772/intechopen.86502 of discrete cation and anion [17], DESs are formed from an eutectic mixture of a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), mostly quaternary ammonium salts, and a metal salt or hydrogen bond donor (HBD). The mixture forms a eutectic phase which has a lower melting point than the individual components [109]. There is a charge delocalization created through hydrogen bonding between, for example, a halide anion of the HBA and the HBD which causes the decrease in the melting point [18].…”

“…Therefore, the development of 2 of 19 innovative and sustainable strategies [16][17][18] appears to be necessary to generate a new framework for superhydrophobic surfaces. Environmentally friendly materials [19][20][21][22] are a forward-looking approach towards materials science because they also play an important role in applications to distinct ecosystems due to their benign properties. For that reason, eco-friendly surfaces without the presence of fluorine compounds remain a challenge [23,24].…”
