Greece, Portugal, Spain: New evidence on the economic effects of military expenditure using the new SIPRI data

Abstract: This article first compares old with newly updated and extended SIPRI military expenditure data for Greece, Portugal, and Spain. Using the new data to confirm or reject earlier findings, it then replicates a Solow growth model application employed in a 2012 study by Dunne and Nikolaidou. In addition, the article provides new evidence on the military expenditure-economic growth nexus for these three countries using the extended data that now cover the post-global financial crisis and European debt crisis years.… Show more

“…On the other hand, this research showed that there was no significant effect of military expenditure on economic growth in Greece. Nikolaidou (2016) determined no significant effect of military expenditure on economic growth in Greece, Portugal and Spain from 1960 to 2014. Churchill and Yew (2017) examined the relationship between military expenditure and economic growth and their study found that growth-retarding effects of military expenditure was more pronounced in less developed countries.…”

“…Barros and Santos (1997) and Dunne and Nikolaidou (2005) did not find any relationship between military expenditure and Portuguese economic growth in the periods 1950-1990 and 1960-2002. Furthermore, Nikolaidou (2016) concluded that Portuguese military expenditure was insignificant in promoting economic growth during the period 1960-2014. However, more recently, clear empirical evidence has been found of the effects of military spending on the Portuguese economy over a broader time horizon, from 1874 to 2018.…”
