Great ape communication as contextual social inference: a computational modeling perspective

Abstract: Human communication has been described as a contextual social inference process. Research into great ape communication has been inspired by this view to look for the evolutionary roots of the social, cognitive, and interactional processes involved in human communication. This approach has been highly productive, yet it is often compromised by a too-narrow focus on how great apes use and understand individual signals. In this paper, we introduce a computational model that formalizes great ape communication as a… Show more

“…The latter would open up the possibility of third-order intentionality (the attempt to get the other to think such-and-such by virtue of the recognition of that attempt, i.e. full Gricean 'meaning'), a possibility that Dennett [53] has argued should at least be entertained to see if it yields interesting predictions (and see [54]).…”

“…What else was needed for language to evolve? Higher orders of intentionality and group-wide prosociality are now by many considered as the key ingredients of the human interaction engine that could have paved the way for the evolution of conventional languages, given that evidence for these features in nonhuman species remains scarce [3,44,58,64] and because these qualities are partly shared with other, cooperative breeding primates [11]. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen to what extent this disparity between nonhuman and human animals can be explained by methodological constraints.…”
