GRB 200415A: A Short Gamma-Ray Burst from a Magnetar Giant Flare?

Abstract: The giant flares of soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) have long been proposed to contribute to at least a subsample of the observed short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this paper, we perform a comprehensive analysis of the high-energy data of the recent bright short GRB 200415A, which was located close to the Sculptor galaxy. Our results suggest that a magnetar giant flare provides the most natural explanation for most observational properties of GRB 200415A, including its location, temporal and spectral features,… Show more

“…Following Yang et al (2020b) and Yang et al (2020a), we calculate the burst duration, T 90 , in 8 keV -800 keV energy band using the continuous time-tagged event (CTTE) data of the Fermi/GBM detector n0. The results are shown in Figure 2.…”

“…In addition, a third track was recently found for those short GRBs originating from magnetar giant flares (a.k.a. MGF-GRBs, e.g., GRB 200415A, Yang et al 2020a;Svinkin et al 2021;Roberts et al 2021;Zhang et al 2020a). Since there is no redshift measurement for GRB 210121A, we assign its redshift as a free parameter ranging from 10 −5 to 10 and over plot it with a dotted line in Figure 7.…”

“…After decades of researches, the radiation mechanism of GRB prompt emission is still unclear (e.g., Zhang & Yan 2011;Geng et al 2018Geng et al , 2019Lin et al 2018;Zhang et al 2018aZhang et al ,b, 2021Duan, & Wang 2019a,b;Huang et al 2019;Li et al 2019b;Yang et al 2020;Zhang 2020). The photospheric emission model seems to be a promising scenario (e.g., Abramowicz et al 1991;Thompson 1994;Mészáros & Rees 2000;Rees & Mészáros 2005;Pe'er & Ryde 2011;Fan et al 2012;Lazzati et al 2013;Ruffini et al 2013;Gao & Zhang 2015;Bégué & Pe'er 2015;Pe'er et al 2015;Ryde et al 2017;Acuner & Ryde 2018;Hou et al 2018;Meng et al 2018Meng et al , 2019Li 2019a,c,d;Acuner et al 2020;Wang et al 2020).…”
