GRB 100219A with X-shooter – abundances in a galaxy at z =4.7

Abstract: Context. Abundances of galaxies at redshifts z > 4 are difficult to obtain from damped Ly α (DLA) systems in the sightlines of quasars (QSOs) due to the Ly α forest blanketing and the low number of high-redshift quasars detected. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with their higher luminosity are well suited to study galaxies out to the formation of the first stars at z > 10. Its large wavelength coverage makes the X-shooter spectrograph an excellent tool to study the interstellar medium (ISM) of high redshift galaxies, … Show more

“…We search the literature for measurements of impact parameters of the GRBs in our sample but find that only two have been reported Thöne et al 2013). We find that the image of the host has been obtained for an additional GRB (D'Elia et al 2014) for which we measure the impact parameter.…”

“…The third and fourth columns present the impact parameter and corresponding error. a References: (1) Castro et al (2003); (2) Thöne et al (2013); (3) this work; (4) Bloom et al (2002); (5) Perley et al (2013) for the observed half galaxy. One could make the simple assumption that the cold clumps in the ISM and halo gas move randomly, but that most are bound inside the gravitational well.…”

“…In some cases it is possible to determine column densities of both H i and metals in their host galaxies and hence calculate abundances for a wide range of chemical elements (e.g., Fynbo et al 2006;Savaglio 2006;Prochaska et al 2007b;Ledoux et al 2009;D'Elia et al 2010;Thöne et al 2013).…”

“…In addition significant dustdepletion factors (e.g., Savaglio & Fall 2004;Thöne et al 2013;Hartoog et al 2013), large amounts of reddening (e.g., Greiner et al 2011;Zafar et al 2012) and strong metal lines (e.g., Savaglio et al 2003;Christensen et al 2011;de Ugarte Postigo et al 2012) are regularly detected towards GRBs.…”
