Grazing exclusion reduces below‐ground biomass of temperate subhumid grasslands of South America: A meta‐analysis and a database

Abstract: There are several plant below‐ground biomass databases for grasslands, but the contribution from the southern hemisphere is minimal. Particularly, no study has compiled the published values of plant below‐ground biomass for the temperate subhumid grasslands of South America. In these grasslands, called Río de la Plata grasslands, grazing is the most frequent disturbance. We set two objectives: (1) to compile and synthesize data of four variables: below‐ground biomass, fraction of total biomass allocated below‐… Show more

“…Biomass is a heterogeneous source of energy since it can appear in various forms: forestry (cleaning of mountains and river basins), agricultural waste (stubble), or agri-food (waste from the livestock industry or industrial oil) [107]. In this sense, America has large green areas thanks to the watersheds that bathe the continent [108]. For its part, at the island level, the conditions surrounded by water preserve the vegetation and can be very useful since much of it must be harvested and properly treated to produce energy.…”

“…Several local studies on paired grazed and ungrazed native grasslands have previously showed important changes in SOC stocks that varied according to soil types (Piñeiro et al, 2009(Piñeiro et al, , 2010. More recent studies showed that belowground C inputs are heavily impacted by the grazing condition (grazed-135 ungrazed) (López-Mársico et al, 2023). It is surprising that Säumel et al, ignored the well documented differences among native grazed or ungrazed grasslands: its species composition and vegetation structure.…”
