Cyanobacterial dominance or blooms can influence ecosystem structure in reservoirs, yet there are only few studies of its effect on the resource use and trophic structure of zooplankton. We hypothesised that zooplankton traits would exhibit a strong response to the increase of invasive and toxic cyanobacteria. We investigated the effect of an invasive bloom‐forming cyanobacterium Raphidiopsis raciborskii (formerly Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii) on zooplankton functional traits (e.g., growth, reproduction, allochthonous resource use and realised niche) through laboratory experiments and 3‐year field investigations in two subtropical reservoirs. The realised niche (i.e., resource and habitat use) was quantified using stable isotopes (termed isotopic niches). We fed the cladoceran zooplankton Moina sp. with Scenedesmus obliquus (chlorophyte), R. raciborskii, and a mixture of S. obliquus and R. raciborskii in laboratory experiments. A diet of R. raciborskii alone depressed the growth and reproduction of Moina sp. compared to a diet of S. obliquus alone, but a mixture of S. obliquus and R. raciborskii greatly alleviated the inhibition effects caused by cyanobacteria. Under natural field conditions, we did not find a strong inhibition effect of R. raciborskii dominance on the zooplankton, but a high biomass of R. raciborskii was associated with an increase (17%) in the relative allochthonous resource (terrestrially derived organic matter) use by cladocerans (but not for copepods), even though the chlorophyll‐a concentration increased from 17 μg/L in the non‐bloom period to 28 μg/L during periods of R. raciborskii dominance or blooms. Furthermore, a high biomass of R. raciborskii increased the contribution of inter‐taxa variation (taxa sorting) to the expanded isotopic niches of the zooplankton community. Our study helps to clarify cyanobacteria‐zooplankton interactions and highlights the importance of cyanobacterial dominance or blooms in regulating cross‐ecosystem resource use and biogeochemical cycling mediated by zooplankton in aquatic ecosystems.

Although functional and phylogenetic diversities are increasingly used in ecology for a large variety of purposes, their relationships remain unclear and likely vary presumably over taxa, yet most recent studies focused on plant communities. Different concepts predict that a community becomes functionally more diverse by adding phylogenetic lineages, subtracting lineages, adding species, reducing or increasing environmental constraints. In this study, we investigated ground-dwelling spider, ground beetle and ant assemblages in coastal heathlands (>11 000 individuals, 216 species), and their estimated functional and phylogenetic diversities as minimum spanning trees using several traits related to the morphology, feeding habits and dispersal of species, and phylogenetic trees, respectively. Correlations were overall positive and high between functional and phylogenetic diversities. Accounting for taxonomic diversities and environments made disappear this relationship in ants, but maintained them in spiders and ground beetles, where taxonomic diversity related to functional diversity only via increasing phylogenetic diversity. Environmental constraints reduced functional diversity in ants, but affected functional diversity only indirectly via phylogenetic diversity (ground beetles) and taxonomic and then phylogenetic diversity (spiders and ground beetles). Results are consistent with phylogenetic conservatism in traits in spiders and ground beetles, while in ants traits appear more neutral with any new species potentially representing a new trait state. Lineage diversities mostly increased with taxonomic diversities, possibly reflecting un-measured environmental conditions.

The structure of freshwater phytoplankton communities can be strongly influenced by environmental and spatial processes at different scales. To identify the main forces that drive phytoplankton structure becomes a relevant tool to understand several knowledge gaps in the phytoplankton ecology domain, such as community succession, biological invasions and responses to disturbances. We used the morphological-based functional groups (MBFG) approach to investigate the influence of environmental conditions (physical and chemical factors), nutrient availability and spatial processes (habitat connection and species dispersal) in structuring microphytoplankton community in a subtropical hypereutrophic reservoir located in southern Brazil. Samples were taken quarterly, between February 2017 and December 2018. We used distance-based multivariate analysis of variance (PERMA-NOVA) to evaluate potential spatial and seasonal dissimilarities in the MBFG's biovolume, and variation partitioning approach (pRDA) to evaluate the role of environmental, nutrient availability and spatial components in explain the microphytoplankton community structure. We identified 16 microphytoplankton taxa, which were sorted into five MBFGs. Significant seasonal dissimilarities were observed in the MBFG's biovolume. Higher relative biovolume of potential harmful cyanobacteria (MBFG III) and alien dinoflagellates (MBFG V) was observed in summer and autumn/winter, respectively. Pure environmental component (composed by physical and chemical predictors insolation, precipitation, total dissolved solids, turbidity, water temperature, water transparency and wind intensity) explained 45% of the variance in the MBFG's biovolume, whereas pure nutrient availability component explained 7% and spatial component explained only 3% of the biotic variance. The results showed that the environmental factorsespecially the seasonal-influenced onesare more effective than nutrient availability and spatial processes in explaining the microphytoplankton community structure in this ecosystem. Our findings alert to the need to consider the variability of the environmental conditions (mainly those directly influenced by seasonality) in phytoplankton community structure in disturbed freshwater ecosystems prone to eutrophication events.
