In order to address the high preparation cost of styrene–butadiene–styrene block copolymer (SBS) modified asphalt, four kinds of polyphosphoric acid (PPA) content (0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% PPA by weight of the matrix asphalt) were selected to prepare composite modified asphalt with better high-temperature performance. The physical properties of composite modified asphalt were evaluated by conventional performance tests. The rheological properties of composite modified asphalt were evaluated by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test and bending beam rheometer (BBR) test. The synergistic modification mechanism of PPA and SBS was revealed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy test. The results show that with the increase of PPA content, the penetration of PPA/SBS composite modified asphalt is reduced by 20.92%, 25.07% and 28.94%, respectively, compared with matrix asphalt, and the softening point is increased by 5.46%, 22.69% and 34.03%, respectively. In addition, PPA can improve the thermal oxidative aging resistance of asphalt. PPA can improve the shear resistance, high-temperature performance and temperature sensitivity of asphalt. At 82 °C, compared with SBS modified asphalt, the phase angle of PPA/SBS composite modified asphalt can be decreased by 8.63%, 13.23% and 19.24%, respectively, and G*/sinδ can be increased by 41.97%, 67.62% and 70.97%, respectively. SBS mainly exists in asphalt in the form of physical blending, and PPA has a new chemical reaction with asphalt, which increases the macromolecules and chain hydrocarbon components in asphalt, and the macroscopic performance is the improvement of high-temperature performance of asphalt. However, PPA has a negative effect on the low-temperature performance of the SBS modified asphalt.

This study introduced phosphogypsum coupled with steel slag powder to prepare the phosphogypsum based filler (PF) for asphalt mixture. Penetration, penetration index, softening point, ductility, equivalent softening point, moisture stability of asphalt mortars with different steel slag powder content, filler-asphalt ratio, and PF content were studied. Mechanical properties of PF based asphalt mortar (P-AM) were then analyzed to determine the optimum steel slag content in PF. Overall desirability method was used to determine the optimum replacement ratio of PF content in limestone filler. Rheological properties of P-AM were also analyzed through dynamic shear rheometer. Volumetric performance, high-temperature performance, low-temperature performance, and moisture stability tests were carried out on PF based AC-20 asphalt mixture. Results showed that P-AM presented the optimum performance when the content of steel slag powder was 23% by mass of phosphogypsum. Fatigue and rutting factor of asphalt mortar were enhanced by PF. The optimum PF content in replacing limestone filler was 75% through overall desirability evaluation. PF developed the high-temperature performance and moisture stability of asphalt mixture. Additionally, volumetric and low-temperature performance were not significantly affected by PF. It is suggested that using PF which is based on phosphogypsum as a filler of asphalt mixture to partially replace traditional limestone filler was adequate.

Characterization of Sustainable Asphalt Binders Modified with Styrene–Isoprene–Styrene (SIS) and Processed Oil

The current study aims to evaluate the viscosity and rheological properties of PG 64-22 modified with Styrene–Isoprene–Styrene (SIS) and Processed Oil (PO) to enhance asphalt binder properties. Performance properties were measured at high, intermediate, and low temperatures. PG 64-22 was blended with SIS and Processed Oil at three levels (5%, 10%, and 15% by weight of binder) and two concentrations (6% and 12% by weight of binder), respectively. Modified binders underwent two short and long artificial aging processes, through the spinning of the thin film in an RTFO oven and a pressure aging vessel (PAV). The Superpave binder evaluations were carried out using a rotational viscometer (RV), dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), and bending beam rheometer (BBR). According to the findings of the research, the addition of SIS caused higher values of viscosity, but when co-modified with processed oil, there was a substantial decrease in viscosity values. As a result, workability was improved. (1) It was observed that a greater reduction in viscosity was achieved when the processed oil was present at a higher concentration at 135 °C compared to a lower concentration. (2) The study showed that the incorporation of processed oil led to a reduction in rutting performance of the asphalt binder. However, the addition of SIS resulted in a notable enhancement of rutting resistance. (3) The role of processed oil as co-modifier at concentrations of 6% and 12% caused significant decreases in G*sin δ, based on the susceptibility of asphalt molecules to accept oil molecules in their network links. (4) The extracted measurements from the BBR tests indicated that modification with SIS and PO improved the low-temperature cracking resistance significantly. Comparison of asphalt binders modified with 6% and 12% PO and the same SIS content showed significant changes in modification with 12% PO rather than 6%.
