Gravomagnetic lensing by NUT space

Abstract: Using the fact that the null geodesics in NUT space lie on spatial cones, we consider the gravomagnetic lens effect on light rays passing a NUT deflector. We show that this effect changes the observed shape, size and orientation of a source. Compared to the Schwarzschild lens, there is an extra shear (a differential twist around the lens axis) due to the gravomagnetic field which shears the shape of the source. Gravomagnetic monopoles can thus be recognized by the spirality that they produce in the lensing patt… Show more

“…As for all astrophysical objects, in principle there are two such means: One could observe the influence on light (i.e., the lensing features) or the influence on massive particles. The lensing features of NUT objects have been comprehensively discussed by Nouri-Zonoz and Lynden-Bell [9]; an analytical formula for the shadow of a NUT black hole, which is a particular lensing feature, is contained as a special case in the work of Grenzebach et al [10]. The motion of massive particles in the NUT space-time was studied in a mathematically very elaborate paper by Kagramanova et al [11]; moreover, Hackmann and Lämmerzahl [12] calculated an upper bound for the NUT charge of the Sun by analysing the motion of Mercury.…”

“…This results in the vanishing of the global angular momentum. Also, if one compares the gravitational lensing produced by the Schwarzschild and Taub-NUT metrics, the effects are the same except for a shearing effect coming from the NUT parameter [30]. It is interesting to note that the Plebański-Demiański metric cannot be written in the Kerr-Schild form [25] unless the acceleration and NUT parameters vanish [34].…”

“…The gravitomagnetic lensing in nonrotating NUT spacetime has been studied in [60]. The results show that the NUT charge influences the gravitational lensing through the null geodesics.…”
