Gravity models of interprovincial migration flows in Canada with hierarchical multifactor structure

Abstract: Following recent contributions on migration flows, we contribute to the literature by relaxing restrictions on how multilateral resistance to migration (MRM) may affect province-pair-specific migration flows. We follow recent advancements in the three-dimensional (3D) panel data models with a hierarchical multifactor structure and develop the more flexible specification for MRM. In addition to including unobserved global (country) factors with province-pair-specific coefficients, we can control for local origi… Show more

“…Since then, many studies added other variables such as age, politics, income, education, and so on in model. The gradual incorporation of these factors into the model is contributing in explanation of migration phenomena [75][76][77]. For example, a GM describing the spatial interaction is used to predict migration between cities [78].…”

“…Several studies investigated the determinants of interprovincial migration (Serlenga and Shin 2021;White and Haan 2021;Day and Winer 2006;Helliwell 1996;Newbold 1996;Osberg et al 1994;Day 1992;Robinson and Tomes 1982;Laber and Chase 1971;Courchene 1970). However, a limited number of studies estimated the impact of provincial-level migration on macroeconomic variables.…”

“…The analysis explores whether the COVID-19 pandemic shock negatively impacts expatriates in the host country, as well as identifies heterogeneous effects across different ethnic groups. The focus on Oman deviates from prior research focused solely on a source country and a host country, where the major concern is the reason individuals choose to migrate from a less developed to a more developed country (Karemera et al, 2000;Serlenga & Shin, 2021). Instead, the focus is on the exogenous effect of the COVID-19 shock on ethnic expatriates in the host country.…”
