Gravity and on-shell probe actions

Abstract: In any gravitational theory and in a wide class of background space-times, we argue that there exists a simple, yet profound, relation between the on-shell Euclidean gravitational action and the on-shell Euclidean action of probes. The probes can be, for instance, charged particles or branes. The relation is tightly related to the thermodynamic nature of gravity. We provide precise checks of the relation in several examples, which include both asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS space-times, with partic… Show more

“…Finally, there exists a worrying interpretation of the Smarr relation (3.3), explained in [128], which states that the total energy equals the on-shell probe brane actions [125,146]. In our case, the right hand side of (3.3) equals exactly the on-shell Wess-Zumino term since the DBI term is absent.…”

“…(We follow Seiberg and Witten and work in Euclidean signature, converting to Lorentzian signature at the end of the computation. In fact the Euclidean version of the condition we study has a deep interpretation in terms of the internal mathematical consistency of string theory on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds: see [32][33][34][35]. )…”
