Gravel Content Effect on the Shear Strength of Clay-Gravel Mixtures

Abstract: Gravel content is an important factor affecting the mechanical properties of clay-gravel mixtures. To study the effects of gravel content on the shear strength of clay-gravel mixtures, constant-strain-rate drained triaxial compression tests were conducted for various mixtures. The gravel contents were 30%, 40%, 50% and 70%. The confining pressures were varied from 50kPa to 300kPa. Test results indicate that the deviator stress at failure under the same confining pressure increases with the increase in gravel c… Show more

“…At the same time, the skeleton of soil-rock mixture is formed, and the interlocking and interlocking effect between particles was constantly enhanced, which was reflected in the strength enhancement. But increased to 50% when the content of construction waste, the curve was falling, strength reduced instead, this is because along with the increase in content of construction waste, fine particle content was less, fine particles between the cohesive force of sharply reduced, at the same time building waste produced more space between failed to fill completely compacted by clay, leading to mild decline (Zhao et al 2017, Hu et al 2018, Wang and Zhan 2011. “…On the other hand, rocks in colluvial soil-rock mixtures exhibit strong angularity, taking on needle-plate like shapes. The difference in rock shapes has a huge impact on the mechanical properties of the soil-rock mixture [32][33][34][35]. Nouguier-Lehon [36] based on different rock shapes adopted granular flow software to simulate mechanical properties of soil-rock mixtures and achieved that the rock shape has great influence on the strength of soil-rock mixtures.…”
