Graphitti: An Annotation Management System for Heterogeneous Objects

Abstract: Abstract-Annotation is the process of supplementing data with additional information that was not part of the actual observation, but reflects post-facto comments and associations made by a user who analyzes the data. While annotation management systems are emerging in the field of relational data, such systems for scientific applications, where there is a wide heterogeneity in the types of annotable data, are almost nonexistent. In this demonstration paper, we describe Graphitti, a tool that (i) allows a user… Show more

“…Online annotation systems are computer-mediated communication tools that allow groups of people to collaboratively read and annotate material online. Many studies have shown that online annotation systems increase student learning across many different educational settings (Quade, 1996;Cadiz et al, 2000;Nokelainen et al, 2003;Hwang and Wang, 2004;Marshall and Brush, 2004;Ahren, 2005;Gupta et al, 2008;Robert, 2009;Su et al, 2010).…”

“…Ontology Management. We have previously demonstrated OntoQuest, our ontology management system [2] and its applications [4]. Specifically for medialife, we have developed an upper-level ontology for events based on BFO (Basic Formal Ontology) and DOLCE, an extension of the PIM ontology (http://dev.nepomuk.semanticdesktop.org/wiki/ PimoOntology) for personal information and relationships, and a media ontology.…”
