Graphing Calculator Programs for Instructional Data Diagnostics and Statistical Inference

Abstract: A number of programs written for the TI-83 Plus calculator are demonstrated in this article to illustrate this graphing calculator's surprisingly advanced statistical capabilities. Examples include residual plots for analysis of variance, pairwise comparison in one-factor experimental design, statistical inference for simple linear regression and confidence intervals for contrasts used in experimental design. These and a number of other programs are available for download. Advances in graphing calculator stati… Show more

“…For example, advanced statistical capabilities have greatly expanded for statistical and graphing calculators. Kuhn's (2003) students use the TI-83 Plus graphing calculator to perform sophisticated statistical data diagnostic and inference procedures during class time. Not only can this calculator perform residual plots for ANOVA, pairwise comparisons, confidence intervals for one-factor experimental designs, and statistical inference for simple linear regression, but the expanded programming capabilities also feature upgrades and downloadable programs from the Internet.…”

“…Not only can this calculator perform residual plots for ANOVA, pairwise comparisons, confidence intervals for one-factor experimental designs, and statistical inference for simple linear regression, but the expanded programming capabilities also feature upgrades and downloadable programs from the Internet. According to Kuhn (2003), these calculators offer one alternative to distance education students who do not have access to other sophisticated statistics software programs. Other researchers have reported using statistical and graphing calculators in their classes as well (Kelly, 1998;Morgan, 1997;Scott & Jackman, 1999).…”
