ISR develops, applies and teaches advanced methodologies of design and analysis toWe have implemented a web browser companion called Domain Tree Browser (DTB) that builds a tree structured visual navigation history while browsing the web. The Domain Tree Browser organizes the URLs visited based on the domain name of each URL and shows thumbnails of each page in a zoomable window.A usability test was conducted with four subjects.

This paper explores some design possibilities and constraints for 3D enhancements of graphical user interfaces. This is done with the aim of conveying more information in less screen space, while avoiding visual clutter. Design elements include the use of "slappedback" windows obtained by projecting windows and icons into three dimensions; "trays", an alternative to folders or piles; the use of transparent "beams" for indicating hierarchy; and the use of "periphs" for a form of fisheye projection on window borders. In addition we employ shading and shadows to enhance the interface, and automatic placement algorithms to prevent visually confusing occlusion. By considering these approaches together, rather than in isolation, the interactions between the different modifications are made explicit.

A comparison of the use of text summaries, plain thumbnails, and enhanced thumbnails for Web search tasks

We introduce a technique for creating novel, enhanced thumbnails of Web pages. These thumbnails combine the advantages of plain thumbnails and text summaries to provide consistent performance on a variety of tasks. We conducted a study in which participants used three different types of summaries (enhanced thumbnails, plain thumbnails, and text summaries) to search Web pages to find several different types of information. Participants took an average of 67, 86, and 95 seconds to find the answer with enhanced thumbnails, plain thumbnails, and text summaries, respectively. As expected, there was a strong effect of question category. For some questions, text summaries outperformed plain thumbnails, while for other questions, plain thumbnails outperformed text summaries. Enhanced thumbnails (which combine the features of text summaries and plain thumbnails) had more consistent performance than either text summaries or plain thumbnails, having for all categories the best performance or performance that was statistically indistinguishable from the best.
